Much Mormon history was made in this area as well. A place referred to as Mountain Meadows became the site of a massacre in 1857 when a group of Mormons led by John Doyle Lee murdered 120 emigrants whom they suspected of posing a threat to their Church. He was exiled to northern Arizona, excommunicated from the church and later executed for this crime. Read more about this controversial figure known as John D. Lee. |
